QUESTION:

An egg is released from rest from the roof of a building and falls to the ground. As the egg falls, what happens to the momentum of the system of the egg plus the earth?

ANSWER:

Solution 19DQ Step 1: The only force acting between the egg and earth is gravity. We know that, gravity is a conservative force and if there is no other external force acting on the system then the momentum of the whole system is conserved. When the egg falls towards earth’s surface, it has a momentum whose direction is towards earth’s centre. By the force of gravity which is dependent on the mass of two objects, earth also gets accelerated towards the egg, but by a very small amount. Because, m egg× g = M earth× aearth This is the force equation which has to be satisfied.
