QUESTION:
Predict the precipitate produced by mixing an \(\mathrm{Al}\left(\mathrm{NO}_{3}\right)_{3}\) solution with a NaOH solution. Write the net ionic equation for the reaction.
ANSWER:Step 1 of 2
Here, we are going to predict the precipitate produced from the reaction.
The precipitation reaction is that where an insoluble product is formed. The insoluble product is called precipitate.
The reaction between the aqueous solution of \(\mathrm{Al}\left(\mathrm{NO}_{3}\right)_{3}\) and NaOH are given below:
\(\mathrm{Al}\left(\mathrm{NO}_{3}\right)_{3}(\mathrm{aq})+3 \mathrm{NaOH}(\mathrm{aq}) \rightarrow \mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{OH})_{3}(\mathrm{~s}) \downarrow+\mathrm{NaNO}_{3}(\mathrm{aq})\)
From the reaction of \(\mathrm{Al}\left(\mathrm{NO}_{3}\right)_{3}\) solution with a NaOH solution, \(\mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{OH})_{3}\) is produced as a precipitate. This is because, \(\mathrm{Al}^{3+}\) ion is insoluble in water.
