Chapter 6 Problem 21P

Question

Define these terms: enthalpy, enthalpy of reaction. Under what condition is the heat of a reaction equal to the enthalpy change of the same reaction?

Solution

Step 1 of 3

Here, we are asked to define enthalpy and enthalpy of reaction. And also state under what condition is the heat of a reaction equal to the enthalpy change of the same reaction.

Enthalpy (H), is the total heat of the system. It is a thermodynamic quantity. Enthalpy is the sum of internal energy and the product of pressure and volume. It is defined by the equation:

H = U + PV

where U = internal energy of the system.

P = Pressure of the system.

V = Volume of the system.
