QUESTION:

Arrange the following atoms in order of decreasing radius: C, Li, Be.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

The distance from the center of the nucleus of an atom to its outermost shell is referred to as its atomic radius.

On moving from left to right across a period in the periodic table, the effective nuclear charge increases, i.e., the nucleus pulls the electrons of the outermost shell towards itself, and hence the atomic radius decreases.
