Statistical signifi cance, I A randomized comparative experiment examines whether a calcium supplement in the diet reduces the blood pressure of healthy men. Th e subjects receive either a calcium supplement or a placebo for 12 weeks. Th e researchers conclude that the blood pressure of the calcium group was signifi cantly lower than that of the placebo group. Signifi cant in this conclusion means statistically signifi cant. Explain what statistically signifi cant means in the context of this experiment, as if you were speaking to someone who knows no statistics.
