Dealing with cholesterol Clinical trials have shown that reducing blood cholesterol using either drugs or diet reduces heart attacks. Th e fi rst researchers followed their subjects for 5 to 7 years. In order to see results as quickly as possible, the subjects were chosen from the group at greatest risk, middle-aged men with high cholesterol levels or existing heart disease. Th e experiments generally showed that reducing blood cholesterol does decrease the risk of a heart attack. Some doctors questioned whether these experimental results applied to many of their patients. Why?
