Chapter 6, Problem 6.38

(choose chapter or problem)

Baking cakes A food company is preparing to market a new cake mix. It is important that the taste of the cake not be changed by small variations in baking time or temperature. In an experiment, cakes made from the mix are baked at 3008F, 3208F, or 3408F, and for 1 hour or for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Ten cakes are baked at each combination of temperature and time. A panel of tasters scores each cake for texture and taste. (a) What are the explanatory variables and the response variables for this experiment? (b) Make a diagram like Figure 6.4 to describe the treatments. How many treatments are there? How many cakes are needed? (c) Explain why it is a bad idea to bake all 10 cakes for one treatment at once, then bake the 10 cakes for the second treatment, and so on. Instead, the experimenters will bake the cakes in a random order determined by the randomization in your design.
