Chapter 6, Problem 6.48

(choose chapter or problem)

Drug improves coordination A drug is suspected of aff ecting the coordination of subjects. Th e drug can be administered in three ways: orally, by injection under the skin, or by injection into a vein. Th e potency of the drug probably depends on the method of administration as well as on the dose administered. A researcher therefore wishes to study the eff ects of the two explanatory variables: dose at two levels and method of administration by the three methods mentioned. Th e response variable is the score of the subjects on a standard test of coordination. Ninety subjects are available. (a) List the treatments that can be formed from the two explanatory variables. (b) Describe an appropriate completely randomized design. (Just outline the design; dont do any randomization.) (c) Th e researcher could study the eff ect of the dose in an experiment comparing two dose levels for one method of administration. Th e researcher then could separately study the eff ect of administration by comparing the three methods for one dose level. What advantage does the experiment you designed in (a) have over these two separate experiments taken together?
