Chapter 9, Problem 9.22

(choose chapter or problem)

Free throws Activity 9.2B shows you how to use the Signifi cance Test applet at the books Web site, www.whfreeman.com/sta2e, to test a basketball players claim that he makes 80% of his free throws. Suppose that the players claim is true and that you use the applet to shoot 20 shots. (a) What are the mean and standard deviation of the sampling distribution of p^, the sample proportion of made free throws? (b) If the player actually makes 8 shots, what is the value of p^? (c) Sketch a graph like Figure 9.7 (page 441) that shows the sampling distribution. Mark the location of the sample proportion p^ from (b) on the horizontal axis of your sketch. (d) How likely is it that you would get a value of p^ as unusual as the one you did if the players claim is true? What do you conclude about whether the player is an 80% free-throw shooter?
