Chapter 10, Problem 10.50

(choose chapter or problem)

Darwins plants Charles Darwin, author of Th e Origin of Species (1859), designed an experiment to compare the eff ects of cross-fertilization and selffertilization on the size of plants. He planted pairs of very similar seedling plants, one self-fertilized and one cross-fertilized, in the same pot at the same time. Aft er a period of time, Darwin measured the heights (in inches) of all the plants. Here are his data:14 Pair Cross Self Pair Cross Self 1 23.5 17.4 9 18.3 16.5 2 12.0 20.4 10 21.6 18.0 3 21.0 20.0 11 23.3 16.3 4 22.0 20.0 12 21.0 18.0 5 19.1 18.4 13 22.1 12.8 6 21.5 18.6 14 23.0 15.5 7 22.1 18.6 15 12.0 18.0 8 20.4 15.3 Perform a complete analysis of Darwins data that includes both a signifi cance test and a confi dence interval. Follow the four-step statistical problem-solving process (page 19).
