QUESTION:

The following ions are best described with resonance structures. Draw the resonance structures, and using the formal charge arguments, predict the best Lewis structure for each ion:

1. \({\rm{NC}}{{\rm{O}}^{\rm{ - }}}\)

2. \({\rm{CN}}{{\rm{O}}^{\rm{ - }}}\)

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 8

Resonance structures are formed when electrons shift the positions over the available atoms. The movement of these electrons over a set of atoms provides stability to the molecule as a whole.

The formal charge on an atom in a molecule is derived as:

\(FC = V - \left( {N + \dfrac{B}{2}} \right)\)

Where V represents the atoms valency, N represents the electron count existing as lone pairs and B represents the electron count existing as bond pairs.
