QUESTION:

Air enters a nozzle steadily at 200 kPa and 658C with a velocity of 35 m/s and exits at 95 kPa and 240 m/s. The heat loss from the nozzle to the surrounding medium at 178C is estimated to be 3 kJ/kg. Determine (a) the exit temperature and (b) the exergy destroyed during this process.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 8

Air is accelerated in a nozzle while losing some heat to the surroundings. The exit temperature of air and the exergy destroyed during the process are to be determined.

Assumptions are

1. Air is an ideal gas with variable specific heats.

2. The nozzle operates steadily.

The gas constant of air is  (Table A-1).

The properties of air at the nozzle inlet are (Table A-17)
