Problem 10QQ

Choose the best answer to the following. Explain your reasoning with one or more complete sentences.

What happens to the core of a high-mass star after it runs out of hydrogen? (a) It shrinks and heats up. (b) It shrinks and cools down. (c) Helium fusion begins right away.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

We have to discuss what is going to happen to the core of a high mass star after it exhausted all the hydrogen.

Like every other star, a high mass star is has its origin from a nebula that the gravitational force contracts it into a protostar.  As hydrogen runs out inside the core, a high-mass star responds by developing a hydrogen-fusing shell and the outer layers of the star beings to expand and it becomes a red giant.
