Spherical aberration in a thin lens is minimized if rays
Chapter 6, Problem 12Q(choose chapter or problem)
Spherical aberration in a thin lens is minimized if rays are bent equally by the two surfaces. If a planoconvex lens is used to form a real image of an object at infinity, which surface should face the object? Use ray diagrams to show why.

SOLUTION
Spherical aberration is minimum for the rays which are suffering from bending at the two surfaces that are incident and emergent surfaces of a lens. If the rays are made to incident on the convex surface of a plano-convex lens, the rays bend at both sides of the lens. So there is not much difference between the bending of incident and emergent rays. If the rays are incident on the plane surface of a plano-convex lens, then the rays would not bend on the plane surface. But the rays bend more at the convex surface. So there is a lot of difference in the bending between the incident and the emergent rays, as the aberration is high. The associated ray diagrams are presented below.
