Chapter 9 Problem 80

Question

By means of a rope whose mass is negligible, two blocks are suspended over a pulley, as the drawing shows. The pulley can be treated as a uniform solid cylindrical disk. The downward acceleration of the 44.0-kg block is observed to be exactly one-half the acceleration due to gravity. Noting that the tension in the rope is not the same on each side of the pulley, fi nd the mass of the pulley.

Solution

Step 1 of 7)

The first step in solving 9 problem number 80 trying to solve the problem we have to refer to the textbook question: By means of a rope whose mass is negligible, two blocks are suspended over a pulley, as the drawing shows. The pulley can be treated as a uniform solid cylindrical disk. The downward acceleration of the 44.0-kg block is observed to be exactly one-half the acceleration due to gravity. Noting that the tension in the rope is not the same on each side of the pulley, fi nd the mass of the pulley.
From the textbook chapter Rotational Dynamics you will find a few key concepts needed to solve this.
