Chicken egg shells are composed primarily of calcium carbonate, CaCO3. In a classic demonstration carried out in chemistry and biology classes, vinegar is used to remove the shell from an uncooked egg, revealing the semipermeable membrane that surrounds the egg keeping it intact.
