Stiffness of a Beam A cylindrical log is to be cut so that it will yield a beam that has a rectangular cross section of depth d and width w. The stiffness of a beam of given length is directly proportional to the width and the cube of the depth. The diameter of the log is 18 inches. What depth will yield the stiffest beam: d=10 inches, d = 12 inches, d= 14 inches, or d = 16 inches? 18 in. d
