(10 points) How do the teacher and dancers prepare before class begins Describe the atmosphere, tone and mood of the class. In the beginning of class, everyone was clearly comfortable in the atmosphere that they were in. Everyone was talking about their weekends, or friends. Others were stretching, the atmosphere was just welcoming and relaxing. Everyone seemed pretty ready for the class, and seemed to all be friends, the class was small in my opinion, There were probably 8 students there. 2. (20 points a-b) a)What are some of the types of movements and exercises that occur in the beginning of class(the first fifteen minutes or so) Be specific and give three or four examples (make sure to include what type of movement (stretching, jumping, upper body, lower body, pliés, etc.) and what parts of the body are being used). Again, It was a fairly small class in my opinion, but clearly everyone had enough room to dance. There was only one male and his name is Eli. They were on the floor and it looked like they were stretching all their body to music. Leg extensions, rolling hands, as well as knees. Practicing dance, and counting out steps. It truly seemed more like meditation, centering themselves in order to be relaxed. They were stretching their bodies in order to make sure them ready for movement. b) How were the exercises presented by the teacher (demonstration, verbally, etc.) and how were they executed by the students (at the barre, lying down on the floor, in the center of the floor) Were the students moving at the same time as the instructor Or did they move while the instructor watched When the teacher was presenting the exercises, she would first talk before playing any music, she would count out the steps, and demonstrate what she wanted them to do, while counting out the steps as well. She would ensure that all the students didn’t have any questions and began playing the music, while the students were performing, or doing the routine she would comment on their movements, correcting in places that needed to be fixed. She did verbal commands, and even went to physically help them, like fixing their posture. 3. (20 points a-b) a) What are some of the types of movements and exercises that occurred in the middle of class (after the first 20 minutes) Be specific and give three or four examples (make sure to include what type of movement (stretching, jumping, upper body, lower body, pliés, etc.) and what parts of the body are being used). Personally, the whole time this seems more like meditation. When I think of modern dance, I think of pop music and hip hop, however, I was definitely surprised that this is slow ballet like dancing. Continuous stretching of the limbs, making sure all their body is loose and calm. Feet are crossed, legs swinging, leg raises, feet are continuously pointed.All of their body is being used, movements are fluid. They are now incorporating standing (the first half was all on the floor.) I can’t think of another way to say this but, their movements look so easy, but it HAS to be precise and in the perfect position, which actually isn’t easy at all. They need to be in sync, they need to have their arms and shoulders all in perfect positions or everything is off. b) How were the exercises presented by the teacher (demonstration, verbally, etc.) and how were they executed by the students (at or away from the barre, in the center of the floor, moving across the floor) Were the students moving at the same time as the instructor Or did they move while the instructor watched Again, the teacher always demonstrates before making them do anything, once she feels like they have a good understanding of what she wants them to do, she will let them go and do it ▯2 on their own. She will after, verbally dictate anything that needs to corrected, and physically help them fix their posture. She will compliment them continuously and let them know they’re doing a good job. Since it is a small class, it is almost a very personal relationship between the teacher and the students. She is able to call on the student and let them know when they are doing good and when they need improvement and in what areas. 4. (10 points) What was the last movement or exercise that the class performed How did class end (teacher summary, students stay and practice, etc.) The last movement of class was actually a formation. The instructor actually did it with them the first time, and then they dance alone altogether. They go two at a time, there are four groups(obviously because there are eight students,) They perform this dance about 4 times, over and over practicing to make sure they are getting it.At the end of class the teacher quickly summarizes everything and tells them that the dance they performed would be their midterm. The class applauded and everyone grabs their stuff ready to leave and have little conversations with their peers as they exit the dance room. 5. (10 points) Throughout the class, what kind of feedback did the instructor give (praise corrections), and how did he or she deliver it to the students Give a specific example or two. If there was no feedback provided by the teacher in a traditional manner, describe the relationship between the teacher and his/her students. Through out the class the teacher made sure to give a lot of feedback. She was always talking or counting out. She wanted to make sure that her students were getting every single step and were hitting every single pose the way it needed to be. She would give praise and correction. Teacher was blunt always, when she was telling them what needed to be fixed, she was never rude about it, but always just being honest and telling them like it is. She helped lift students legs, helped fix their posture, and really took the time to separately tell each student what they needed to fix. I cannot really give you a specific example due to the fact that she literally did it with every student and not just a few. Everyone got her attention and got feedback when needed. 6. (10 points) How did the students respond to the feedback given by the teacher Give a specific example or two. If there was no feedback provided by the teacher, describe the relationship between the students and their teacher. Relationship between the teacher and the students again, were very personal. The students seemed to be very respectful and friendly. The relationship seems very open, teacher and students seem to feel comfortable to say whatever is on their minds. The students are not afraid to fail or ask questions when they are confused. Teacher again, gave feedback several times, and again, fixed postures continuously when needed. Criticism was taken very well, no one would complain or take it negatively, everyone knew that it was only to fix what was wrong, and they would fix it right away and tend to not do it again. Eli for example, had a problem aligning his shoulders to be perfectly even, however, he did eventually get it once it was pointed out to him by the teacher. 7. (20 points) What was your response to the class Did anything in it surprise you (and if so, what) What did you learn about dance or the experience of taking a dance class Make sure to include at least one specific example of how you relate this technique class to your own life as a moving human being. The class was super peaceful, and I honestly did not expect any of the movements at all. I did not expect anything that actually happened in that class. I thought modern dance was more hip hop, pop music, however, it was very ballet. Feet always pointed, turns, a lot of stretching. ▯3 You need to be mostly flexibly and have a lot of agility to do a lot of the movements that were done in class today. There was jumping turns, and every part of their body was moving at all times. The dances were beautiful and peaceful to look at and everyone looked like they were having a good time. The dance techniques were hard, although they looked easy, they are not. The dance moves have to be perfect and in sync. You move with such force, yet look so graceful and at peace with yourself. When I thought about this dance class, I thought about just sleep, or these dances telling a kind of story.Although the music had no lyrics, it was almost as though their movements were telling the very story that the music failed to say. I really truly enjoyed it.
