Orbit of Mars Mars travels around the sun in an elliptical orbit with the sun located at a focus of the orbit. The orbit has a major axis of 3.04 astronomical units (AU) and a minor axis of 2.99 AU. (1 AU is approximately 92.96 million miles, the average distance of Earth from the sun.) Estimate, to the nearest million miles, the perimeter of the orbit of Mars. (Note: The approximate perimeter of an ellipse with semimajor axis a and semiminor axis b is P = p22(a2 + b2 a b ).)
