Solved: To determine which muscles need to be subjected to

Chapter 14, Problem 14.5

(choose chapter or problem)

To determine which muscles need to be subjected to a conditioning program in order to improve one’s performance on the flat serve used in tennis, a study was conducted by the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Virginia Tech.

Five different muscles

1: anterior deltoid 4: middle deltoid

2: pectorial major 5: triceps

3: posterior deltoid

were tested on each of 3 subjects, and the experiment was carried out 3 times for each treatment combination. The electromyographic data, recorded during the serve, are presented here.

Use a 0.01 level of significance to test the hypothesis that

(a) different subjects have equal electromyographic measurements;

(b) different muscles have no effect on electromyographic measurements;

(c) subjects and types of muscle do not interact.
