QUESTION:

Problem 104E

LASIK surgery complications. According to studies, 1% of all patients who undergo laser surgery (i.e., LASIK) to correct their vision have serious postlaser vision problems (All About Vision, 2012). In a sample of 100,000 patients, what is the approximate probability that fewer than 950 will experience serious postlaser vision problems?

ANSWER:

Solution :

Step 1 of 2:

     Let x = number of patients who undergo laser surgery who have serious post-laser vision problem in 100,000 trials.

    Then x is a binomial random variable with n = 100,000 and p = 0.01, q = 1-p = 1-0.01 = 0.99.

   That is,

X B(n, p)

X B(100,000, 0.01)

We know that the probability mass function of binomial distribution is:

              x = 0,1,2,...,n.
