QUESTION:

Draw all the distinct stereoisomers for each structure. Show the relationships (enantiomers, diastereomers, etc.) between the isomers. Label any meso isomers, and draw any mirror planes of symmetry. (a) CH3CHClCHOHCOOH (b) tartaric acid, HOOCCHOHCHOHCOOH (c) HOOCCHBrCHOHCHOHCOOH (d) HO CH3 CH3

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 6

(a) The given compound has two asymmetric centres and hence \(2^2\) stereoisomers present. Out of this i and ii; iii and iv are enantiomeric pairs. They are non superimpossible mirror images. But i and iii; i and iv; ii and iii; ii and iv are diastereomers as they are non superimpossible non mirror images.
