QUESTION:

Problem 22P

A red die, a blue die, and a yellow die (all six sided) are rolled. We are interested in the probability that the number appearing on the blue die is less than that appearing on the yellow die, which is less than that appearing on the red die. That is, with B, Y, and R denoting, respectively, the number appearing on the blue, yellow, and red die, we are interested in P(B < Y< R).

(a) What is the probability that no two of the dice land on the same number?

(b) Given that no two of the dice land on the same number, what is the conditional probability that B < Y < R?

(c) What is P(B < Y < R)?

(b) Given that no two of the dice land on the same number, what is the conditional probability that B < Y < R?

(c) What is P(B < Y < R)?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

Given that there are three dice blue, yellow and red dice

Let B denotes blue die

Let Y denotes yellow die

Let B denotes red die

Then

a) We have to find the probability that no two of the dice land on the same number

Here  no two of the dice land on the same number means

All the three dice shows the different numbers

Then 6 choices for red die

And 5 choices for yellow die

And 4 choices for blue die

The possible no.of combinations are 6(5)(4)=120

The total possible no.of combinations are 63=216

Let E be the event that the probability of no two of the dice land on the same number

Then the probability of no two of the dice land on the same number P(E)=120/216

                                                                                                                    =0.556

Hence probability that no two of the dice land on the same number is 0.556
