QUESTION:

Punishment, when speedy and specific, may suppress undesirable behavior, but it cannot teach or encourage desirable alternatives. Therefore, it is crucial to use positive techniques to model and reinforce appropriate behavior that the person can use in place of the unacceptable response that has to be suppressed.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

Even though physical punishment is considered an effective way of socializing children, it has various negative outcomes through the psychological development of the children. Physical punishment unmistakably causes child hostility and antisocial behaviors. It also results in poor bonding between the parent and the child and a lack of intellectual growth. Later in their life, the child can also experience an abundance of depression and moral dilemmas throughout life. Physical punishments are harsh regardless of culture and timeless practices. Physical punishment can harm the child's conscience by dominating their physical capabilities. Although this form of discipline can suppress undesirable attributes in children for a short time, its lasting impression is too critical to ignore.
