QUESTION: Problem 8P

Calculate the molar mass of each of the following:

 (a) (NH4)3PO4 (b)CH2Cl2 (c)CuSO4·5H2O (d)BrF3

ANSWER:

Solution 8P

Here we have to calculate the molar mass of each of the following:

Molar mass:- Molar mass or molecular mass is defined as the sum of the atomic masses of individual atoms.

Step 1

(a) (NH4)3PO4

The atomic mass of N = 14.01 g/mol, 314.01 = 42.03 g/mol

Atomic mass of H = 1.008 g/mol, for 12 H-atoms, 12  1.008 = 12.096 g/mol

Atomic mass of P = 30.97 g/mol

Atomic mass of O = 16 g/mol, 4 moles of O is present in (NH4)3PO4 , hence 4 16 = 64 g/mol

Thus the molar mass of (NH4)3PO4  is

 = 42.03 g/mol + 12.096 g/mol + 30.97 g/mol + 64 = 149.096 g/mol

The molar mass of (NH4)3PO4  is found to be 149.096 g/mol.
