QUESTION: Problem 47P

A mixture of bases can sometimes be the active ingredient in antacid tablets. If 0.4826 g of a mixture of Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2 is neutralized with 17.30 mL of 1.000 M HNO3, what is the mass % of Al(OH)3 in the mixture?

ANSWER:

Solution 47P

Here, we have to calculate the mass % of Al(OH)3 in the mixture.

Step 1 of 5

From the given,

Antacid tablet is a mixture of Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2

Weight of the mixture = 0.4826g.

Therefore, Al(OH)3 +Mg(OH)2 = 0.4826g.

Here, we consider weight of Al(OH)3 is ‘x’ g and Mg(OH)2 is ‘y’ g.

x + y  = 0.4826g………..(1)

y = 0.4826 g - x
