QUESTION:

In the process of pickling, rust is removed from newly produced steel by washing the steel in hydrochloric acid:

(1) \(6 \mathrm{HCl}(\mathrm{aq})+\mathrm{Fe}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{3}(\mathrm{~s}) \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{FeCl}_{3}(\mathrm{aq})+3 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}(\mathrm{l})\)

During the process, some iron is lost as well:

(2) \(2 \mathrm{HCl}(\mathrm{aq})+\mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{s}) \rightarrow \mathrm{FeCl}_{2}(\mathrm{aq})+\mathrm{H}_{2}(\mathrm{~g})\)

Which reaction, if either, is a redox process?

If reaction 2 did not occur and all the HCl were used, how many grams of \(\mathrm{Fe}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{3}\) could be removed and \(\mathrm{FeCl}_{3}\) produced in a \(2.50 \times 10^{3}-L\) bath of \(3.00 M\) HCl?

If reaction 1 did not occur and all the HCl were used, how many grams of Fe could be lost and \(\mathrm{FeCl}_{2}\) produced in a \(2.50 \times 10^{3}-L\) bath of \(3.00 M\) HCl?

If 0.280 g of Fe is lost per gram of \(\mathrm{Fe}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{3}\) removed, what is the mass ratio of \(\mathrm{FeCl}_{2}\) to \(\mathrm{FeCl}_{3}\)?

ANSWER:

Solution 98P:

Step 1

(a) Here we have to find out which reaction is a redox process.

The two given reaction of pickling process is ,

1. 6HCl (aq) + Fe2O3 (s) → 2FeCl3 + 3H2O

2.2HCl (aq) + Fe (s)→ FeCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

Among the two given reactions, the 2nd reaction is a redox process because in this reaction the oxidation state of iron changes from 0 to +2 (oxidizes) whereas the oxidation number of hydrogen changes from +1 to 0 (reduces).
