Here, we are going to explain the behaviour of the distribution of molecular speeds for Ar and He at the same temperature.
Step 1:
We know that, the kinetic energy of an object is related with its speed. It is given as follows
where, m is the mass of an object and is the speed.
This equation indicates that if a heavy object and a light object have the same kinetic energy, then the heavy object must be moving more slowly. But according to the postulate of kinetic molecular theory “The collision of the particles are elastic. The collide particles exchange their energy but they do not any energy during friction. Therefore, the kinetic energy of the particle is constant.” This indicates that the gas of higher mass have lower speed than the gas of lighter mass.
