QUESTION: Problem 83P

Analysis of a newly discovered gaseous silicon-fluorine compound shows that it contains 33.01 mass % silicon. At 27°C, 2.60 g of the compound exerts a pressure of 1.50 atm in a 0.250-L vessel. What is the molecular formula of the compound?

ANSWER:

Solution 83P

Here we have to find out the molecular formula for silicon-fluorine compound.

Step 1

Given:

Mass = 2.60 g

Volume = 0.250 L

Pressure = 1.50 atm

R = 0.0821 L atm mol-1 K-1

The molar mass of silicon fluoride compound can be calculated by using ideal gas equation as follows,

M =

    = = 170.77 g/mol

Now the % of F present can be calculated as, 33.01 % Si - 100 = 66.99 % F

Hence we can say that the compound contain 33.01g of Si and 66.99 g of F.
