QUESTION: Problem 44P

Write the full electron configuration of the Period 2 element with the following successive IEs (in kJ/mol):

IE1 = 801

IE2 = 2427

IE3 = 3659

IE4 = 25,022

IE5 = 32,822

ANSWER:

Solution 44P:

Here, we are going to write the full electron configuration of the Period 2 element with the following successive IEs (in kJ/mol).

Step 1: Ionization Energy (IE): It the amount of energy required when 1.0 mol of electron is removed to 1.0 mol of atom to form the gaseous ion.

For example: Atom +e- ion++ e-

Successive ionization energies increases slowly from one valence electron to the next, but the ionization energy increases suddenly for the first core electron.

The second ionization energy (IE2) removes a second electron from the positively charged ion. Therefore,  IE2 is always larger than IE1.

ion+ion2+ (g) + e- (IE2 > IE1)
