QUESTION: Problem 51P
Are the bonds in each of the following substances ionic, nonpolar covalent, or polar covalent? Arrange the substances with polar covalent bonds in order of increasing bond polarity:
(a) S8
(b) RbCl
(c) PF3
(d) SC12
(e) F2
(f) SF2
ANSWER:
Solution 51P
Here we have to identify are the bonds in each of the following substances ionic, nonpolar covalent, or polar covalent and have to arrange the substances with polar covalent bonds in order of increasing bond polarity:
Non polar covalent bond:- When the electronegativity (E.N) difference of the bonded atom is between 0.0 to 0.4 then the bond is said to be non polar covalent bond.
Polar covalent bond:- When the electronegative difference of the bonded atom is between 0.5 to 1.8 then the bond is said to be polar covalent bond.
Ionic bond:- When the electronegative difference between the two atoms is greater than 1.8 then the bond is said to be ionic bond.
Step 1
(a) S8
Here all the atoms are same, hence the electronegativity difference between S8 elements will be equal to zero.
Thus the bond form in S8 is a nonpolar covalent bond .
