QUESTION:

Problem 24P

By what factor does the rate in Problem 16.26 change if each of the following changes occurs: (a) [BrO3?] is doubled; (b) [Br ?] is halved; (c) [H+] is quadrupled?

ANSWER:

Solution 24P

Here we have to find out by what factor does the rate change in each of the following rate law equation,

Step 1

(a) [BrO3-] is doubled;

For 1st order reaction, the rate law equation can be written as,

Rate = k [BrO3-]1

In this question it has been given that [A] is doubled than rate law becomes,

Rate = k [2 BrO3-]1

       = 21 = 2

Thus the rate increases by 2 or rate is double.
