QUESTION:

Problem 17P

(a) What is the pH of 0.0333 M HNO3? Is the solution neutral, acidic, or basic? (b) What is the pOH of 0.0347 M KOH? Is the solution neutral, acidic, or basic?

ANSWER:

Solution 17P

Step 1

(a) Here we have to calculate the pH of 0.0333 M HNO3 and have to explain the solution is neutral, acidic, or basic.

Concentration of [HNO3] = 0.0333 M

It is known that pH = -log [H+]

                                = - log [0.0333] = 1.478

Here pH< 7, thus the solution is acidic.

Thus the pH of HNO3 is found to be 1.478 and the solution is acidic.
