SPRING 2016 CHEM 112 MONTANO Important Laws & Theories in Chemistry  Law of conservation of Mass o In a chemical reaction, it is impossible for matter to either be created or destroyed o The amount of moles present before a reaction must be present after the reaction  Law of Definite proportions o all samples of a compound have the same proportions of the elements they are composed of  The decomposition of 18 grams of water results in 16 grams of oxygen and 2 grams of hydrogen  This gives you a oxygen:hydrogen ratio of 8:1  This will be true in all water decomposition reactions, no matter how much water you have  Law of Multiple Proportions o When 2 elements form different compounds with the same elements, you can use simpler ratios to figure out the ratio of the new compound  The ratio for H2O is 8:1 (OR 16:2)  Since H 2 2ses the same two atoms, we can use the ratio from water to find the ratio for hydrogen peroxide  The only thing that changes in H O2is2the addition of an oxygen, so we can change the ratio 16:2 to 32:2 (adding 16 g for 1 more mole of oxygen)  This ratio simplifies to 16:1, meaning we have double the oxygen in hydrogen
