Questions & Answers

QUESTION:

Draw the structure of an optically inactive triglyceride that contains two oleic acid residues and one palmitic acid residue.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

In this exercise, we're asked to draw the structure of an optically inactive triglyceride that contains two oleic acid residues and one palmitic acid residue.

Recall that triglycerides are triesters formed by the combination of one molecule of glycerol and three molecules of long chain carboxylic acids. In this case, we’re specifically told which fatty acids to use. Oleic acid is an unsaturated C18 fatty acid and palmitic acid is a saturated C16 fatty acid. With this information in mind, we can now draw the desired structure.
