QUESTION:

Personal Skills, Values, and Lifestyle Goals

a. Explain how your interests, skills, and values will affect your career choice.

b. What are six common values that people have?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2:

(a) Interests are those activities which a person really loves to do. A person might be very interested in solving maths problems or painting, taking care of animals etc, interests are very broad in nature.

Skills are those activities which a person is able to do well. A person might be very much skilled in solving problems, or could be very creative.

Values are those principles which a person lives by and the beliefs which are very important to him. If a person has an analytic /problem solving bend of mind and if he has interests in solving problems, and if he considers responsibility as his value, then he could choose engineering as his career.

A person’s successful career choice is highly correlated with identifying his values, skills and interests with accuracy. A person who does not value compassion nor has the skill set of STEM, but if he is interested in becoming a medical professional then that career choice is not going to last long.
