The extremely high temperatures needed to trigger nuclear fusion are proposed to be generated by laser irradiating a spherical pellet of deuterium and tritium fuel of diameter \(D_{p}=1.8 \mathrm{~mm}\).

(a) Determine the maximum fuel temperature that can be achieved by irradiating the pellet with 200 lasers, each producing a power of \(P=500 \mathrm{~W}\). The pellet has an absorptivity \(\alpha=0.3\) and emissivity \(\varepsilon=0.8\).

(b) The pellet is placed inside a cylindrical enclosure. Two laser entrance holes are located at either end of the enclosure and have a diameter of \(D_{\mathrm{LEH}}=2 \mathrm{~mm} .\) Determine the maximum temperature that can be generated within the enclosure.

Calculate the surface area of the spherical pallet.

\({A_s} = \pi D_P^2\)

Here, \( {D_P}\)  is the diameter of the spherical pallet.

Substitute 1.8 mm for \({D_P}\) in the above equation and we get,

\({A_s} = \pi {\left( {1.8 \times {{10}^{ - 3}}} \right)^2}\)

\({A_s} = 1.018 \times {10^{ - 5}}\;{{\rm{m}}^2}\)

Write the energy balance equation from the spherical pallet.

\(\mathop {{E_{in}}}\limits^.  = \mathop {{E_{out}}}\limits^. \)

\(\alpha NP = \varepsilon {A_s}\sigma T_p^4\)

\({T_p} = {\left( {\frac{{\alpha NP}}{{\varepsilon {A_s}\sigma }}} \right)^{1/4}}\)

Here, \({T_p}\) is the maximum fuel temperature that can be achieved \(\mathop {{E_{in}}}\limits^. \) is energy flow into the pellet, \(\mathop {{E_{out}}}\limits^. \) is energy flow out of the pellet, \(\alpha \) is absorptivity, N is the number of lasers, P is power, \(\varepsilon \) is emissivity and \(\sigma \) is Stefan-Boltzmann constant.

Substitute 0.3 for \(\alpha \), 200 for N, 500 W for P, 0.8 f
