Chapter 4 Problem 4.3

Question

A gardener uses a 12-lb wheelbarrow to transport a 50-lb bag of fertilizer. What force must the gardener exert on each handle?

Solution

Step 1 of  2

Given:

Weight of wheelbarrow = 12 lb

Weight of fertilizer = 50 lb

Distances from point A (wheel axle):

The wheelbarrow weight acts 6 in from A.

Fertilizer weight acts 12 in from A.

Each handle is 28 in from the center of the wheel, so the total lever arm from A to the hands is 28 + 12 = 40 in

Assume the gardener exerts equal force F on each handle, so the total upward force = 2F

The wheel is the pivot point. So, we take moments about point A.

No moment due to the reaction at the wheel, since it acts through point A.
