Problem 46P

Problem 46P

List the symbol and atomic number of each element.

(a) boron

(b) neon

(c) silver

(d) mercury

(e) curium

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

Solution 46P

Here, we are going to write the symbol and atomic number of the given elements.

Step1:

Dalton was the first scientist to use the symbols for elements in a very specific sense. When he used a symbol for an element he also meant a definite quantity of that element, that is, one atom of that element.

Symbols of some elements are formed from the first letter of the name and a letter, appearing later in the name. Other symbols have been taken from the names of elements in Latin, German or Greek.

Step2:

The number of protons if an atom is called its atomic number. It is denoted by ‘Z’. All atoms of an element have the same atomic number.

Step3:

The symbols and atomic numbers of the given elements are:

  1. Boron

        Symbol - B

        Atomic number (Z) = 5

 b)        Neon

        Symbol - Ne

        Atomic number (Z) = 10

  c)        Silver

        Symbol - Ag

        Atomic number (Z) = 47

  d)        Mercury

        Symbol - Hg

        Atomic number (Z) = 80

    e)        Curium

        Symbol - Cm

        Atomic number (Z) = 96
