Reaction energy diagram is the graph of reaction progress versus energy. The vertical axis represents the overall energy of the reactants and the horizontal axis represents the reaction progress.

Given reaction :

The above reaction is a propagation reaction. The reaction energy diagram for the above reaction is as shown below:

(b) What is the activation energy for this reverse reaction?

In simpler terms, the activation energy is the minimum kinetic energy that has to be available to the chemical reactants in a chemical system, for a chemical reaction to occur. It is denoted by Ea.

The activation energy represents the energy difference between the reactants and the transition state. The transition state for a given reaction is +17 kJ/mole. So the activation energy can be calculated as the difference of heat of reaction and the transition state.

Hence, The activation energy for the above reverse reaction is +13 KJ/mole , which is +3 Kcal/mol.
