QUESTION:

How does gas solubility depend on temperature?

ANSWER:

Solution 8Q :

Step 1:

The solubility of a gas is dependent on temperature. An increase in temperature results in a decrease in gas solubility in water, while a decrease in temperature results in an increase of gas solubility in water.

The solubility for gases decreases as temperature increases. The physical reason for this is that when most gases dissolve in solution, the process is exothermic. This means that heat is released as the gas dissolves. This is very similar to the reason that vapor pressure increases with temperature. Increased temperature causes an increase in kinetic energy. The higher kinetic energy causes more motion in the gas molecules which break intermolecular bonds and escape from solution.
