Problem 33P

Problem 33P

Determine whether each pair is a conjugate acid-base pair.

(a) NH3, NH4+

(b) HCl, HBr

(c) C2H3O2−, HC2H3O2

(d) HCO3−, NO3−

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

Answer :

Conjugate acid and base :

A conjugate acid, within the Brønsted–Lowry acid–base theory, is a species formed by the reception of a proton (H+) by a base—in other words, it is a base with a hydrogen ion added to it. On the other hand, a conjugate base is merely what is left after an acid has donated a proton in a chemical reaction.

Conjugate acid -base pair:

(a) NH3, NH4+

H3O+ is called a “hydronium ion” and most often one can simply consider it to be a hydrated hydrogen ion (H+ + H2O → H3O+ ). + Cl- . The HCl is donating a proton while the NH3 is accepting the proton. Notice that every reaction has two conjugate acid/base pairs and that in a pair the acid is always named first

(b) HCl, HBr

No they are not conjugate acid base pair.

(c) C2H3O2−, HC2H3O2

               HCO3 -(aq) + HC2H3O2(aq) → H2O(l ) + CO2(g) + C2H3O2 -(aq) B/L base B/L acid

             (d) HCO3−, NO3−

Is not a Conjugate acid -base pair
