Steric number: The bond angle of a molecule can be calculated by using steric number concept of VSEPR theory. The steric number is defined as the sum of a number of atoms bonded to the central atom of a molecule and number of lone pair present on the central atom.

 Steric number (SN) = number of bond pair + number of lone pair  

According to the VSEPR theory, the relation between bond angle and steric number is shown below,

In order to find out the steric number we have to draw the Lewis structure of the molecule,
