Problem 10RQ

Why does water vapor in the air condense when the air is chilled?

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

Solution 10RQ When air is chilled the temperature of the air reduces. Since the temperature depend on the average kinetic energy of the air molecule if the temperature of the air decreases, the average kinetic energy of the air also decreases. Now, air contains water molecule. So when the average kinetic energy of air decreases, the average kinetic energy of the water molecule in the air also decreases. When the average kinetic energy of the water molecule decreases, the kinetic energy of some of the water molecule comes down below the potential energy of the intermolecular force. Hence some of the water molecules get trapped together in the potential barrier of the intermolecular force of the water molecule and forms liquid water. This is why, when the air is chilled, the water condenses.
