Chapter P6 Problem 15MCP

Question

Choose the BEST answer to each of the following:

A rainbow is the result of light in raindrops that undergoes

(a) internal reflection.

(b) dispersion.

(c) refraction.

(d) All of these.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

A rainbow is an arc of color in the sky that can be seen when the sun shines through falling rain.

It is created when white light is bent while entering a droplet of water, split into separate colors, and reflected back. At first, there is refraction, then the dispersion of white light into colors of a different wavelength.

Reaching the opposite side of the drop, each color is refracted back into the drop due to the complete internal reflection that hits the drop surface.

Every color is refracted to the air again.
