Chapter 10 Problem 42TAE

Question

If you toss a ball vertically upward in a uniformly moving train, it returns to its starting place. Will it do the same if the train is accelerating? Explain.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

When the train is uniformly moving, the train and the ball consist of the equal horizontal velocity component. And both will have same (equal) horizontal displacement.

It will cause the ball to remain in a state of rest instead of throwing it upward. So, the ball will ultimately return to the hands of the person.
