Chapter 10 Problem 81TAE

Question

At which of the indicated positions does the satellite in an elliptical orbit experience the greatest gravitational force? Have the greatest speed? The greatest velocity? The greatest momentum? The greatest kinetic energy? The greatest gravitational potential energy? The greatest total energy? The greatest angular momentum? The greatest acceleration?

Solution

Step 1 of 4

When the satellite is at point A in the elliptical orbit its distance is minimum as compared to other point B, C and D.

The gravitational force of any specific object relies on the mass as well as distance of the body, which means that it increases with reduction in distance. At position A, since the distance is minimum, gravitational force will be maximum.

Also, if the gravitational force is maximum at point A, then the speed as well as velocity of the satellite is maximum at point A.

Thus, the gravitational force, speed and velocity will be maximum at A.
