QUESTION:

What physical phenomenon underlies the production of beats?

ANSWER:

Solution 26RQ Step 1: In a particular instant when two sound waves are reaching towards an observer, the observer will hear it at the same time as a soft and loud sound alternative due to the mixing of both waves. This phenomenon is known as production of the beat. The phenomenon underlies behind the mixing of two sound waves is interference. The process of mixing of two sound waves in a medium which results in the change in amplitude of the waves are known as interference of sound waves. Since the sound waves are having different amplitudes, its phase difference will decide whether the amplitudes are added up or subtracted. If the amplitudes are added up, we can say it as a constructive interference and if the amplitudes are subtracted from one another, we can say it as a destructive interference.
