Chapter 17 Problem 5Q

Question

Problem 5Q

Is there a point along the line joining two equal positive charges where the electric field is zero? Where the electric potential is zero? Explain.

Solution

Step-by-step solution

Step 1 of 3

Electric field of charge q1 is E1 at point O to the right, and Electric field of charge q2 is E2 at point O to the left.

The electric fields are in opposite direction. In order for the net electric field to be zero at point O, E1 must be equal to E2.

The electric field is zero in the middle point of two charges.
