When two dice are thrown the microstates are (1,1), (1,2), (1,3), (1,4), (1,5), (1,6), (2,1), (2,2),..  etc.Therefore, for 1 there are 6 microstates and the same is true for 2 as well. Therefore, total microstates are 6 X 6 = 36.
